Middlemore Lectures
Richard Middlemore was for some thirty years the leading ophthalmologist in the West Midlands. He was the second son of Richard Middlemore of “The Davids”, a small estate in the parish of Northfield, near Birmingham. He was a prominent British Ophthalmologist of the 19th century who significantly contributed to the field through his comprehensive scholarly work and active medical practice. He was renowned for his educational efforts, particularly at the Birmingham Eye Hospital, where he delivered annual lectures aimed at advancing ophthalmology. Recognising the need for continued education, Middlemore established a series of post-graduate lectures in 1889, which he endowed to ensure their perpetuation. These prestigious addresses, known as the Middlemore Lectures, continue to be held to this day, serving as a testament to Richard’s dedication to the field and to his vision for ongoing medical education and professional development in ophthalmology.
